Event Description

This session is part of the Talent Tweak Monthly Life Science Career Webinar Series, designed to help students, young researchers, and professionals explore career opportunities across academia, translational science, and the global biomedical research ecosystem. Each session highlights a research field and the real-life journey of an accomplished scientist to show how scientific curiosity, skill development, and strategic decisions shape a successful career.

In this month’s session, we focus on Cardio-Oncology—a growing field that connects cardiology and cancer biology to understand how cancer and its treatments affect the heart. Instead of going deep into technical science, this session will offer a broad, accessible overview of the field and showcase how diverse scientific skills and this topic contribute to its progress

The speaker will share his journey from graduate research to Harvard, discussing the skills, decisions, and experiences that shaped his path—from early research in protein biology and mitochondria to working in an emerging interdisciplinary field. Students will gain insight into how to build a strong academic profile, choose a research field, and navigate opportunities in basic and translational science.

Presented by:

Dr. Moydul Islam Polash, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Harvard Medical School

In this interactive session, you will:

  • Get an easy-to-understand overview of how cardiology and cancer biology connect in cardio-oncology.
  • Learn what types of research questions and methods are used in basic and translational biomedical science.
  • Understand how early research experiences, publications, and mentorship help build a strong scientific profile.
  • Discover practical steps for preparing for higher studies, scholarships, and competitive postdoctoral positions abroad.
  • Receive career guidance on academic pathways, networking, communication, and growing your visibility as a young researcher.

Who should attend?

Highly motivated senior undergraduate students interested in biomedical research Graduate-level research students (MSc, MPhil, PhD) exploring academic or translational science careers

  • Postdoctoral researchers seeking guidance on career development and global opportunities
  • Industry scientists looking to understand emerging research directions in cardio-oncology
  • Anyone interested in careers in cardiovascular science, cancer biology, or academic biomedical research

Webinar Rules & Regulations

  • This webinar is a 1 hour and 30 minute session, beginning with a brief 5-minute overview of the rules and an introduction to the speaker.
  • The session will consist of a presentation by the guest speaker, followed by an interactive Q&A segment

Speaker Bio

Dr. Moydul Islam Polash is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Harvard Medical School, where he investigates the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying cancer-associated cardiac diseases.

He completed his PhD at Washington University in St. Louis (2024), where his research focused on cardiovascular diseases, specifically protein-folding abnormalities and mitochondrial dysfunction in heart failure. One of his first-authored studies was featured as the cover article in The Journal of Clinical Investigation—a leading biomedical journal.

Dr. Polash has published multiple peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals and contributes actively to the scientific community. He serves as:

  • Grant Reviewer for the Graduate Women in Science (GWIS) National Fellowships
  • Book Proposal Reviewer in the Genetics, Genomics, and Biochemistry portfolio at Elsevier
  • Editorial Board Member & Reviewing Editor at BMC Cardio-Oncology (Springer Nature)

He has presented his work at numerous international conferences and is deeply passionate about mentoring early-career scientists. His research and mentorship efforts aim to bridge cardiology, oncology, mitochondrial biology, and translational science, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes.
